I Did Everything I Was Taught I was Supposed To Do.

And It All Fell Apart Anyway.

Sometimes the most loving thing people know to do is help you hold together the structure that is quietly crushing you. But another kind of love sees the weight, names what feels wrong, and walks beside you toward freedom. This is the conversation I wish someone had offered me sooner.

There is a version of this conversation I needed to have thirty years ago and nobody offered it to me.

That is not an accusation.

The people in my life were doing what they knew to do - which was to reinforce the structure, shore up the walls, keep the whole thing standing. Because when the structure is all you know, the most loving thing feels like holding it together.

But there is a different kind of love. The kind that says: I see the weight you are carrying. I have carried it too. Let me show you what I found on the other side.

That is the conversation I am here to have.

If you have been in that church, mosque, or temple - physically or metaphorically - carrying something heavy and calling it devotion, this is the thing I wish someone had said to me: This can't be right.

And you already know it.

You have known it for a while.
