Unpopular opinion: the most sensitive man in the room is often the most dangerous one ever underestimated.
I was a sensitive kid.
Empathic.
Emotionally open.
A free spirit born into a military family that went to church on Sundays.
Two of the most structure-demanding, compliance-oriented environments that exist.
And I was wired exactly wrong for both of them.
And nobody told me that was okay.
Not once in over fifty fucking years did anyone tell me that it was ok!
So I learned to turn the sensitivity off.
Not because I wanted to.
Because it was survival.
You learn very quickly in those rooms what is acceptable and what gets you looked at sideways.
The empathy, the emotional openness, the free spirit - those get compressed.
And compressed things find other exits.
Heavy metal.
Alcohol.
Whatever made the container feel survivable for another week.
Not because I was troubled.
Because I was alive in a space that had no room for it.
Decades later: 22 years in uniform, a combat tour, a Purple Heart, a lifetime in the church -
that same sensitivity is the thing that makes me extraordinary at what I do.
The thing I had to turn off to survive is now the thing that lets me sit across from a man carrying a weight he cannot name and feel exactly where it’s before he says a word.
The things we suppress do not disappear.
They wait.
And when we finally stop suppressing them, they become the greatest gift we have.
